HERONSWOOD BOTANICAL GARDEN
Unparalleled beauty, even amongst the lushlandscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
In 2013, Heronswood Garden—the renowned botanical garden founded by Daniel Hinkley and Robert Jones in 1987—opened its doors to the public for the first time in almost a decade.
Hinkley and Jones sold Heronswood to W.Atlee Burpee & Company, a national seed and plant distribution firm, in 2000. Within six months Burpee had declared Chapter 11, and by 2006 the nursery and garden was shuttered and its large family of workers, known as the Heronistas, were scattered to the winds. This was the beginning of a six-year period of virtually complete neglect of the garden and its rarified inventory of plants.
In 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood at auction, and the rebirth and revealing of the now overgrown landscape began. The Tribe enlisted the help of an enthusiastic Hinkley, who now serves as Heronswood’s Garden Director.
Though many of the original plants that comprised the garden were lost during the period of neglect, many important collections have been recovered, while an exciting inventory of new plants recently collected by Hinkley’s ongoing plant exploration—from China, Vietnam, Chile, Myanmar, New Zealand and Tasmania—are already settled into their new home. The current staff of Heronswood Garden and the managing Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation, not wishing to simply recreate a monument to the past, are committed to making a new Heronswood with a greater polish and botanical wonderment than its original fore bearer.
Today, the Heronswood is open every Friday for self-guided tours and four times a year for the garden’s Plant Sale & Garden Opens—a must-attend event for gardeners and plant lovers from across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. In addition, this year, Heronswood will offer limited availability to book the garden for weddings and other special events. To kick off an exciting spring at Heronswood, the garden is inviting visitors for two special events in April:
Early Spring Plant Sale & Garden Open
April 2, 10 am to 4 pm
Heronswood Garden is holding its annual Early Spring Plant Sale & Garden Open for nature-lovers and gardeners preparing for the coming growing season.
To help visitors get a jump on their own gardens, the Early Spring Plant Sale & Garden Open will feature 14 nurseries from around the Pacific Northwest, including Celestial Dream Gardens, Chimacum Woods, Dancing Oaks Nursery, The Desert Northwest Nursery, Far Reaches Farm, Foxglove Greenhouses, Keeping It Green, Fancy Fronds, Phocus Farms, Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden, River Rock Nursery, Sundquist Nursery, and Scents Nursery. Another featured nursery is Windcliff, the personal garden of Hinkley and, Robert Jones, who are also the original co-founders of Heronswood.
The April 2 event features free lectures by Hinkley and Dennis Bottemiller, Nursery Manager and Propagator at Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden.
After choosing new plants for their gardens and listening to lectures to expand their botanical horizons, attendees are welcome to tour the lovely gardens at Heronswood. The seasonal layouts accentuate the beauty of this rare horticultural gem, perfect for a serene spring stroll or a family getaway.
Admission to the Plant Sale and all lectures is free of charge. Garden entry $10 adults, $5 children get the details HERE.
